Why I Love Craigslist

June 25, 2010

I love craigslist.  I know there are those out there who have a negative opinion about craigslist.  To me, craigslist is no different than the traditional want ads that came before it.  One has to use common sense and be moderately careful, but by following some basic common guidelines, one can score great items for a fraction of their original retail price.  And, the search function makes it much faster than combing ads in the local paper.  It is far more effective than driving from garage sale to garage sale looking for the perfect item.

Recently, I scored this beauty on craigslist.

That’s right!  I bought a beautiful, leather (probably faux, but who cares) club chair from a stranger I found through craigslist.  It was only $50.  It has a couple of minor scrapes on the back, but overall it is in great shape especially for a house with a wild toddler.  And, it is super comfy!

If you are brave, I encourage you to explore craigslist.  Here are my safety tips:

1.  Cash only and only in person.

2.  Try to meet in a neutral location during daylight.

3.  If possible, take another person with you when you go to pick up or sell the item.

Really, just common sense – much like dating through a personal ad (except for the money part – that’s an entirely different conversation).

Like common sense approach. Too bad we really need to do certain things to be safe and comfortable. However, the chair does look good and what a great price. Did the seller wear a trench coat and dark glasses?

Great advice. I am one of those people who are scared of craigslist. However our friend has recently sold many things on there so I am gaining some confidence
